I went this past Sunday afternoon to see another play with my friend Ted....before I talk about the play, I have to mention lunch - yes, big surprise there right? *wink* We went to Santa Maria BBQ for a scrum-diddley-umptious lunch in Culver City. (...a new experience for me. I am generally thankful for those.)
This time we went to see "The Little Dog Laughed" with the boyfriend guy from the TV show 'Roseanne', Johnny Galecki. Johnny Galecki plays Alex, a gay character, a hustler nonetheless, that falls in love with a Hollywood movie star who is about to go big time. (OMG, you get to see him naked briefly, but amazingly, that's not as important as the theater. I never thought I would say that, but if he was not naked, I would have been fine.)
It also features Broadway, Tony award winner Julie White who plays a fierce, not-so-heartless-although-that's-what-she-seems Hollywood agent. Her character was amazing and hilarious. She's this ruthless, stereotypical Hollywood agent with a heart that is so hidden by business.
The story is about how Hollywood makes people conform to roles and how they pull it off. I can't imagine how often and real this storyline is. I don't want to ruin it for you, but I am sure after you see it or hear more about it, you can place some mainstream celebrities that this story can apply to.
It's one of those sick, twisted realities that we can't help but deny that it really happens. ARGH!
I was glad it was presented the way it was with some humor, it makes it easier to digest and talk about then it would with a heavy heart.
...being from the escorting world, (I want to point out that this movie accurately depicted many aspects of the escort portion of the production. That makes it have more aspects reality and ultimately made it more believable to me.) I have to agree with the idea that there are just sometimes it's not appropriate to come out.
My mom would adamantly argue that one would be denying the world of who he or she really is by not coming out, however, I would agrue back that sometimes, the risk is just to great and living a double is is the way it has to be for awhile. (...that's when you can utilize outlets like escorts and other ways, but regardless....) As much as we would like to live in ideal world, it's just not there yet.
I really enjoyed the play even though I was faced with emotion and reality from my own industry.
