Boy of the Moment - BRandom Shots

HX Cover Story

HX Magazine in New York did a story on Rentboy.com's 10th anniversary and my boss, Tom leaving the company. You can read the story on the official HX Magazine website HERE.

Rent(boy) Control
By Steve Weinstein

In its 10th year, Rentboy.com landlord Tom Weise trades in his keys for France

When Tom Weise placed an ad in the back of HX as an escort, he never imagined he would eventually end up leading a revolution with Rentboy.com. At the point he and his partner Jeffrey Davids launched their site in June 1997 (with a party at the legendary Jackie 6), the New York scene was in turmoil. Mayor Giuliani was closing purported hustler bars, stripper theaters and sex clubs, while the police instigated a sweeping raids on escorts. So Weise and Davids set out to take what had been an underground service fraught with danger and turn it into a business transaction. Of course, much has happened to change hustling dynamics in the decade since the website premiered; for starters, the mainstreaming of porn has made actors into “stars” and even “superstars” like Jeff Stryker.

But the greatest change to the adult industry was wrought by the Internet, which gave escorts and their johns a neutral platform on which to exchange information. Rentboy.com led the way, providing guidelines, safe-sex information and forums, allowing buyers to peruse a smorgasbord of physical types and fetishes. In the process, Weise himself has become a spokesman for and a public face of the industry.

However, after working his way up from a stripper at the Eros Theater to running a business that has served more than 20 million satisfied customers, Weise recently announced—much to the industry’s shock and dismay—that he is leaving Rentboy for a new life in Paris as the site enters its 10th year. And even if Weise hadn’t yet achieved his ultimate goal of making prostitution in the U.S. as accepted as it is in his native Germany, he and Davids have at least helped pave the way.

Davids sees escorting “slowly gaining status as a viable job,” citing the increased visibility of hustling in everything from sitcoms to films like Boy Culture. “We have been in the forefront of celebrating the rights of people to do what they want their bodies,” he says. “We don’t believe in the stigma and the oppressive laws governing how a person can relate to another person.” Ultimately, Davids would like to see escorting treated “like any other personal service, from house-painting to psychotherapy. Nobody’s embarrassed to be a porn star anymore,” he says. “Why should people be embarrassed to say that people pay me for sex?”

Today, the business has grown to 10 full-time employees working out of both Union Square and Los Angeles. A web designer, programmers and the sales and marketing team are taking the site to the next level, bringing it further into the public eye. They’re already well on their way to turning Rentboy into a bona fide brand, with its name prominently featured in theater performances and museum exhibitions, as well as popular parties like the upcoming Hustlaball (see sidebar), cruises and the forthcoming 2008 Rentboy Calendar.

For the past two years, the staff has been preparing the next generation of software, which will allow escorts more ways to let themselves be known and to show more of their personality in their profiles. It will also link them more closely to Rentboy’s “truth in advertising” product, Rentboyreviews.com, which allows clients to tell about their meetings with escorts—both good and bad. “One thing that won’t change is our commitment to our tradition of providing a source where escorts can find clients and vice versa,” Davids says.

So why is Weise leaving a business that is not only thriving but expanding? Mortality and love. At age 40, he says he “didn’t want to get old with this. I didn’t want to be a man in his forties among models.” However, inspired in part by a German documentary that will premiere at the Berlin Film Festival next year, he plans to write a book about his experiences.

“He will be sorely missed,” Davids says of his longtime business partner. “Tom Weise is an amazing human being, and one of the most capable people I have ever met. If I am a dreamer, he is a doer. Anything he puts his energy behind is made the better for it.”

For his part, Weise believes that he leaves the sex-worker industry a better place. “We’ve moved far beyond hustler bars,” he says. “We’ve enabled escorts to manage themselves as a business. We’ve even created a support group.”

Weise, who sees himself very much as a political activist, may not have fulfilled his dream of making the oldest profession legal (as it is in Denmark and the Netherlands), but he has given a voice, a safe space and a platform to hard-working hotties who get paid to spend “quality time” with other men.

Star-Bellied Sneetch

Odyseey Magazine this week featured me as the "Star Belly Sneetch of the Week." I think my mom and dad are going to be glad that the money they paid for braces worked so well in this photo. *wink*

"The Sneetches"

Sneetches are a race of odd creatures who live on a beach. Some Sneetches have a star on their bellies, and in the beginning of the story the presence or absence of a star is the basis for discrimination. Sneetches who have stars on their bellies are part of the "in crowd", while Sneetches without stars are shunned. In the story, a "fix-it-up chappie" named Sylvester McMonkey McBean appears, driving a cart of strange machines. He offers the Sneetches without stars a chance to have them by going through his Star-On machine, for three dollars. The old star-bellied Sneetches are furious until
McBean tells them about his Star-Off machine, costing ten dollars. This escalates, with the Sneetches running from one machine to the next, "until neither the Plain nor the Star-Bellies knew whether this one was that one or that one was this one or which one was what one... or what one was who." This continues until the Sneetches are penniless and McBean leaves a rich man. In the end, the Sneetches learn that neither plain-belly nor star-belly Sneetches are superior, and they are able to get along and become friends. The story is an obvious parable for the cycle of fashion and how snobbery and insecurity drive consumerism to consumers' own detriment. It contains the messages that all people regardless of race, class or clothing, are equal, and that the human temptation to judge people by their appearance or by the company
they seem to keep is full of pitfalls. It may also have deeper connotations of
racial discrimination.

Canada

I am in Quebec, Canada this weekend. I love the Quebec flag. It's so regal looking to me. The blue and white colors are two of my favorite colors together. Plus, it's features the fleur de lis which reminds me of New Orleans. (...which is one of the next cities for me! YEA!)
The other flag to the right is the Montreal flag. I am really liking Montreal. I feel like I am in France though. Everything is in French. ...and you know what that means. ...UNCUT BOYS! *wink*

The bars here allow the boys to get totally naked. Bars like Adonis, Taboo and Campus all give me lots to see. Gary was nice enough and treated me to a few moments of private time with some of the hottest boys at the bar in the private entetainment areas in the back. Don't fret, nothing TOO scandalous happened. They did get totally naked though and danced with a dangling uncut dinngie centimeters from my face. One of the boys who was probably the hottest was not that dangling though. Taboo has the youngest looking boys, but Campus is probably my favorite. I feel like I am visiting a friend or something when we go there.

I will have more of a full report later, but I wanted to at least let you know I was alive and still out there. The northeast corner of the continent is pretty hot and very cool at the same time. What's a little crazy too is that Rusty is in Canada too. We are not near each other and it wasn't planned like this, but he's over in Toronto right now.

Boy of the Moment - Brandom Boys

Cute New RentBoy Alert - Ricky Hawke and San Diego

San Diego seems to doing well for the cuties. Have you seen the San Diego section of www.rentboy.com? We are up to 42 boys in that city.
Here's a new one who signed up today, who advertises himself as a "power top straight boy." ...that's hot. he's not just a top, he's a power top.
Personally, I have found that some of the best sex when I bottomed is with a boy who is truly on a power trip. I once heard a quote that said, "The best sex is when you do it for yourself." 90% of the time, I would agree.
Check out his ad at http://www.rentboy.com/rickyhawke.

Some of my other favorites to look at in San Diego are Chad & Brent, Mitch (I just met at the Gay Erotic Expo), Jose 9" Uncut, (I wonder why?) *wink* Oliver (What a cutie!) , Mario, Pornstar Ready for You (HOT!) , and several others that I know personally.
Okay, but what's up with the boys in San Diego looking too young to cross the street by themselves. I know a few of the ones that LOOK young personally, so I know they ARE old enough, but man, I wouldn't let them into a R-rated movie without a parent or legal guardian.

The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald

What do porn stars, hookers, and sunken boats have in common? Absolutely nothing. (I mean really, how random is this blog? I would say VERY since I write about whatever come to my head, and sometimes, that's a scary thing.)

...but I can't get this silly story of a sunken boat of my head today. I would say, "I have the Edmund Fitzgerald on my mind today
I don't even know why I care about this obscure boat at the bottom of the ocean, but I am sure growing up in Michigan has something to do with it since it sank in the Great Lake, Lake Superior to be exact.

I am also absolutely sure that singer "Gordon Lightfoot" is the one I can thank for making this sinking much more on the surface of peoples mind since he sang a song about it. You can read the lyrics HERE. In his song, he sings,
"In a musty old hall in Detroit they prayed in the Maritime Sailors' Cathedral. The church bell chimed, 'til it rang 29 times for each man on the Edmund Fitzgerald."
My mom used to point out the church called Maritime Cathedral in downtown Detroit whenever we would pass it and tell me about the song when I was younger.
To make more personal, there is this shipwreck museum on this island in the Detroit River called Belle Isle. The island does not have much, but it does have this museum of shipwrecks and every once in awhile my family and I would go there on a family field trip or something like that. They had some artifacts like the bell from the Edmund Fitzgerald.
Of course, they is mystery surrounding the boat, (...along with a bunch of lake water too huh? *wink*) and why it sank so fast during the storm. I will admit, it's a bit intriguing.

If you want to find out more about the shipwreck, HERE is a starting place online.

Tom's 10 Year Party

I got the ad copy for my boss Tom's going away party in New York on the 10th of next month at the Hiro Ballroom in the Maritime Hotel. (Yet another hotel that is HOT! HOT! HOT!)

Micky's is HOT!

I just heard a rumor that Micky’s is on fire, and I don’t mean like hot, I mean it’s flaming. I don't know if it's true or what, but stay tuned.

Addendum: Yup, it's true. It's flaming just as much as some of the boys that head there on Friday nights. Several confirmed sources near the popular West Hollywood nightclub have called me to tell me details. Man news AND the flames travel fast.

Hotel Reality Show - Welcome to The Parker

'Welcome to the Parker' is this reality show on Bravo TV about a hotel in Palm Springs. I have not seen it, but I think I want to. (I have to finish 'Dirt' before I can commit myself to a new show. I watched three more episodes last night and can I just tell you, that show is HOT! Episode 7 really turned alot of my senses on, but I will talk more about that later.)

The Bravo website for the show reads in part:

Imagine, if you will, that you are about to spend the weekend at your great aunt's. She is an extremely elegant lady of somewhat indeterminate age. She is beautiful both in spite of, and because of, the fact that she has avoided Botox and face lifts, and you can tell, that in her day she must have been a stunner. > I think that's a FABULOUS way of saying, it's in need of some repair, we are going to a tv show and exploit it and get the money. I seriously think is is BRILLIANT in terms of explaining things. Kudos.

Her estate is truly wonderful: 144 guest rooms, including 12 private villas (if you must ask 311 was Robert Downey's, and 308 was the one where Barbara forced Merv to tear the walls down so she would have more room), clay tennis courts (you'll have to wear whites); two Pétanque courts (boules to the less educated) and croquet (the way she plays it is rather nasty, to be honest), and of course the Gene Autry Residence. Rounding things out are her 10,000 (yes that's right 10,000) sq ft of banquet facilities. Perfect for Steve and Bob's wedding once the state of California catches up with Massachusetts.

The grounds are also home to the Palm Springs Yacht Club – Mrs. Parker is a charter member and honorary Commodore. A yacht club in the desert? Well actually it is a spa, one that takes itself a bit less seriously, you are still expected to go out for a drink after your massage and facial. > Yacht Club? ...that's fierce. One time at White Party a few years ago, one of the dancer coordinators told me to meet him in 30 minutes at the Palm Springs Cruise Ship Terminal. I said okay. Do you know how embarassing it was to call him 30 minutes later and tell him I just figured out that it was the desert and THERE COULDN'T BE A CRUISE SHIP TERMINAL. ARGH! Now if someone told me to meet them at the Palm Springs Yacht Club, I would smile and say I can't. ...THEN I would be in trouble again. Man.

The writers for that are much more my style than most things I read.

They also listed 11 other FAMOUS HOTELS. If you know me, you know hotels are one of my passions. If I wasn't working for RentBoy.com. I would so be at a hotel. Sometimes I really miss working in hotels.

Treasure

I decided today, that I would tell you about three of the most influential people of my life in porn and escorting. These three are towards the list of my favorites. They have helped shape me in that aspect of my life. While I still think of them all as friends, I am not necessarily that "close" to any of them, but that has no direct relation to them being influential.

Steve Shay and Gage Powers are the biggest and first. I have a stronger bond with Steve, but Gage has given me the same things and just been quieter in my life. They probably fucked up my life the most. ...and I love him for it. They also opened it up. Fast. ...and furiously. (Seriously, if someone wants any shot at a normal life, I would tell them to stay away from porn. Just watch it. Name one person it has worked out for? Truly. It allows you enjoy a side of life that seems a fantasy for most and even though it’s alluring, it’s at a cost. I have decided that it's worth the cost and bought it.)

Mark Adams is on the list too for giving me my first chance to be heard. Without him, I don’t think alot of this, if any, would have happened. He even gave me the opportunity to meet the other person on my list, Tom Weise. I wish I had the email but you said, “Ahhh, a porn star that can punctuate.” (Boy did I prove him wrong huh? *wink*) He was the catalyst to taking me from a performer to being the what I believe to be influential person I am today. Even more so, when I met him, he was REAL, nothing blown up or pretending to be someone he's not. He leads a balanced a real life with real things and still had time to deal with me as an individual. He has tact and experience. It helps that he never did anything to take advantage of me and always believed in me. Even when I gave him every excuse not to. I appreciate that from him.

A big part right now is Tom Weise. He’s given more opportunity than anyone in this industry. He’s showed me the way to act, what to do, what not to do and built a company that he practically handed to me on a platinum platter. I have to do him well as he’s retiring this year. I owe alot of who I am to him.

Recently, it's Jason Sechrest. He’s pissed me off again and again. Hell, he’s even pissed in me once, but that’s another story. *wink* I have stood up for him and he’s disappointed me. I have included him in things and then it cost me later on. It started out with a crush, now it’s a sick, fucked up admiration and working relationship. I adore him and would not have had it any other way. He's controversial, but you know what? He's making his way through life.

What's Up Where?

The Sweet Smell Of Blow, Brought To You By Tom Ford / Queerty

The Sweet Smell Of Blow, Brought To You By Tom Ford / Queerty
August 14th, 2007

Always a class act, designer Tom Ford once likened his new cologne’s
scent to that of a man’s crotch. Now, we’re not sure where Ford’s fashionable nose goes, but his cologne’s apparently
got another prominent, perhaps illicit aroma: …Does [Ford’s] scent Tuscan Leather actually smell like cocaine? Well, according to cognoscenti of that drug, yes, a bit. “That’s what everyone says,” admits a counterboy at the Ford store on Madison, who adds that one customer even bought a bottle because he thought it smelled like coke. Homeboy better watch out for drug dogs. And, also, ravenous coke heads looking for a fix. Journo Geofrrey Gray points out, however, that Ford’s scent’s way more affordable than the white stuff: $149 for 49 grams. At current market value, 49 grams of blow would run you about $2,450.
Or so we imagine…

You people who send me stories like this *hehe*- what do you think? You should think, "Man, Brandon's blog would be nothing without me." *wink* Thanks for keeping the material that you read on my blog unique, interesting, and CRAZY! No really, thank you.
